Finding Experts to Interview – How To
When I started my business, I didn’t know anyone. All I had was my phone and my tape recorder. But within a short time, I had a few interviews under my belt. And now, eight years later, I have interviewed some of the top copywriting and marketing experts in the world.
People like Jay Conrad Levinson, John Carlton and Bob Bly. Guys who ordinarily would charge big bucks for their time.
So how did I get these interviews? Well, a few different ways really.
One of the easiest ways is to ask. That’s exactly what I did when I got an interview with internet guru, Mark Joyner. He was a subscriber to my site. I can still remember seeing the name come through on my list.
I emailed him back and I said, “I know who you are. Nice to meet you.” Anyway, I kept in contact and out of that correspondence came an interview. I interviewed him first and then he invited me to be interviewed for one of his programs.
A lot of my other interviews have come when I have made the first contact.
That is…If I find someone in marketing circles who I think will be a good fit for my customers…I email them. And, I ask if I could interview them. That’s how I got to interview people like Bob Bly and Ben Settle.
Now I do have a little bit of help for some of my higher profile interviews. There is a guy who’s been on my web site who’s known about my audios. He is a PR expert who has a lot of famous clients.
One day, he approached me and asked me if I would want to interview Vic Conan. So I did.
Through him I’ve conducted interviews with many others, including: Bill Bartman, Tom Hopkins, Alex Mendosian, John Carlton, Ted Nicholas and some other top experts. These guys are probably paying him a monthly fee to provide PR services and he’s in the business of getting them exposure.
Interviews are part of that exposure. Which is where I come in.
Now the fact that I have a lot of clients on my site certainly helps. But, even If I just had one interview on my web site, the guy would probably still do the interview based on the referral from his PR expert.
Now there are a lot of PR experts and sometimes these PR experts don’t deliver. But if you approach them and position yourself as a good resource for getting a client good exposure, there is no reason the PR expert wouldn’t refer their clients to you.
